Chapter 4 Calculations – Resting Metabolic Rates and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

This page was designed as a service for the readers of Dr. Ellis's books. Without reading the books, you won't have the explanation of the content on this page and it may be difficult for non-readers to make sense of the output arriving from the calculations this page provides.

Enter your values in the fields for bodyweight (pounds or Kg), height (inches or Cm) and age, and check the appropriate gender. Then click the "Calculate" button to calculate your Body Mass Index and your predicted RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate).

Enter:
Pounds:   Kg:
Height (in):   Cm:
Age: Male   Female

Body Mass Index: Wt (kg) ÷ Ht (m2) = BMI

Males:
RMR=(9.99 X weight (kg)) + (6.25 X height (cm)) - (4.92 X age) + 5
Females:
RMR=(9.99 X weight (kg)) + (6.25 X height (cm)) - (4.92 X age) - 161

Predicted RMR:

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

TDEE can be expressed as a multiple of RMR. For a lifestyle of light activity, TDEE is 1.55 times RMR. A very high TDEE (as in a professional athlete in heavy training) is 2.4 times RMR. The list below shows a projected TDEE as a multiple of your predicted RMR, based on the values you entered above.
